What is DecisionMap?

DecisionMap is a free online service that provides decision makers in the public and private sector instant access to easily consumable statistical data about Ireland. DecisionMap uses trusted publically available data sources in conjunction with interactive maps and visualisations to create a unique online resource.

Who is behind DecisionMap?

DecisionMap has been created by Ordnance Survey Ireland and Twelve Horses Ltd. with the goal of encouraging enhanced use of publically available data to aid decision making in the public and private sector.

Why was DecisionMap created?

We believe that decisions based on data are better decisions. What we've tried to do with DecisionMap is to make the data more accessible and easier to use. We want to get your feedback to see if this is something that you find useful.

Who should use DecisionMap?

DecisionMap is designed to help people who use statistical data about Ireland to aid their decision making. This includes people in both the private and the public sectors. We are hoping that you'll use DecisionMap to aid decision making and planning. To help you to find customers for products and services or to plan resources. We believe that decisions based on data are better decisions. We're hoping that DecisionMap will make working with that data easier to use.

How was DecisionMap built?

DecisionMap uses services from Ordnance Survey Ireland in partnership with interactive visualisations created using the VIZI platform from Twelve Horses Ltd. The maps and visualisations use data collated by the Central Statistics Office provided through the National University of Ireland Maynooth. DecisionMap brings these services together for the first time to create something truly unique.

What data does DecisionMap use?

DecisionMap currently uses data from the 2002 and 2006 Census.

Can I share what I find in DecisionMap?

Use the social media links.

Is there any cost to using DecisionMap?

DecisionMap is free to use. The data used in DecisionMap is publically accessible data from the Central Statistic Office.

How will DecisionMap develop?

This is the first time we've done this and it is very much a work in progress. We built a lean website. We want you to use DecisionMap and to give us feedback so we can improve it as we go. DecisionMap itself will also develop over the coming months. We have a plan and more visualisation types we want to introduce but we really need your feedback to ensure that this service is adding value. Otherwise truthfully what is the point?

Why is DecisionMap a beta release?

We're launching in Beta because we believe that's how things should be done. DecisionMap currently uses data from the 2002 and 2006 Census. We want you to use it now so we can further enhance the service prior to the publication of the 2011 Census next year. As the 2011 Census data is released we'll add it to DecisionMap.

How do I start using DecisionMap?

To use DecisionMap start by clicking on any of the Start Exploring options on the homepage. In our experience the best questions lead to even more questions. Have a play and please let us know what you think.
